Founded in 2002 by a small and dedicated group of people from the old 'Ross Connection', we took one look at our beautiful old theatre and we were, like many others, hooked.
Ross Connection were responsible for productions in St Mary's Church, Ross-on-Wye, such as The Sound of Music - Fiddler On The Roof - Joseph And The Technicolour Dream Coat - Jesus Christ Superstar and A Man For All Seasons.
Since our formation we have produced at least two shows every year at the Savoy with as much variation as possible, including Oh What A Lovely War - Naked Justice - Oliver! - Abigail's Party - A Comedy Double Bill and Annie.
Our mid-2005 production Home Front was a revue celebrating the sixtieth anniversary of the end of the Second World War, with particular reference to the way it affected people at home. Funded by a Lottery grant, we sold tickets at the 1940's price of 2/- or 10p a seat.
We opened 2006 with our production of The Killing Of Sister George. In June 2006 celebrated Dylan Thomas with a production of Under Milk Wood combining our talents with those of the Youth Theatre.
Our most successful show so far was the family pantomime Aladdin, again with the Youth Theatre, in January 2007. This was followed by our our version of Richard Harris’s comedy of village life and cricket, Outside Edge. In July 2007 we staged a further slice of British village-based comedy, Pam Valentine’s Day Of Reckoning, portraying a ‘fete worse than death’.
Our members are encouraged to suggest new ideas and ventures, and we are keen to involve the community in building the Savoy Theatre into a resource for the benefit of all. Our resources include our clubroom "The Savoy Hut", for workshops, rehearsals and highly informal play reading sessions.
We have a social calendar that includes social gatherings, visits to other theatres and of course the Christmas Dinner.
We are constantly looking for new members not only to perform but to provide the myriad of other functions - back stage, below stage and front of house - without which the show could not go on.
So if you want to have a go, get in contact, come along and join us. We warn you though - insanity is contagious.
