The young person's voice in theatre
There is no "I" in "team"
Founded in 2004, the Youth Theatre is open to all young people over 13. The aim of the company is to establish a theatre of youth and to put on plays and musicals that will stretch and hone the talents of all the participants.
The Youth Theatre's first full production was Home And Away, an emotional double bill of two plays following the fortunes of young ladies in the First World War, from the post office in their village to the battlefield of the Somme.
Our second production was the full length comedy musical Stepping Out, in November 2005. This show gave the players not just a chance to show off their singing and acting. With the help of amazing dancing queen Chloë we all learned how to tap dance too, putting across a great story with a stunning finale.
In November 2006 we condensed six of the great West End shows into a highly charged evening’s entertainment, ranging through Blood Brothers, Guys and Dolls, The Sound Of Music, Chicago, Phantom Of The Opera and Les Miserables. The programme gave a great opportunity for the cast members to show off their talent.
Our most recent and amazing production was the gorgeously grisly musical Little Shop of Horrors, in March 2008, which was very demanding for actors and backstage crew, but proved to be our biggest success so far.
It goes without saying that youth members are always in demand by the Savoy Players, having formed the company after we met by joining the cast for Oliver! Since then we’ve appeared in Annie , the VE Day anniversary celebration Home Front, Dylan Thomas’s Under Milk Wood, and starring roles in the family panto Aladdin.
We’re planning our next production. A Midsummer Night’s Dream, by William Shakespeare, will be staged from December 11-13.
